Eliminate
the cost and dead
weight of a deck engine by using the main engine
to power both the truck and deck equipment. Cotta Split Shaft
PTO's (sometimes called Split Shaft Transfer Cases) allow one
engine to do the job of two by routing main engine
power to either the rear wheels or the deck equipment.
This is accomplished by using a split input shaft in combination
with a single clutching sleeve. In road position engine power is connected straight through to the drive axle. In PTO position the alxe drive shaft is disengaged and engine power is re-directed up through the gear train to outputs to operate the deck options such as pumps, compressors, blowers, etc. The clutch is designed so that
it will not engage in both the PTO and
truck mode at the same time. In operation you
drive to the work site, shift to PTO, and go to work.
Although Spilt Shaft PTO's look similar to transfer cases they are quite different. Transfer cases (or drop boxes) typically are used to transfer power to the font and rear wheels. Often a front axle disconnect is used to disconnect the front wheels for "roading". In operation, power is input at the top, drops down through the gear train and is transferred to the rear and front wheels.
In split shafts, power is input to the bottom shaft and is directed either through to the drive axle, or, up to the deck equipment. The clutch design prevents operation in road and PTO at the same time.

Split Shaft compared to Transfer Case
Split Shaft PTO's come in capacities to 1000 HP with many
accessory drive options available.
